(More customer reviews)I bought the XJ-2000 because I have moderately bad allergies. I live in grass pollen country, and this year was particularly bad. I bought the XJ-2000 hoping that it would provide me some relief, and I must say that it has done that. Pollen counts are lower, but still high, and I haven't had any problems sleeping due to wheezing and other upper respiratory problems. I do keep it on the low setting since the high setting produces more of a swimming pool smell. My one gripe is that after about 2 weeks, the units became noticably louder. It was whisper quite at first, and now it makes a sort of white noise hiss. It doesn't interupt my sleep, but it is noticable. Where I live it is very quiet though, outside night time noise level is about 30 dBA. So the hiss that the units makes may not be noticable to someone who lives in a louder acoustic environment. I haven't tried the ionic breeze, but for a old cheepo like me the XJ-2000 does just fine.

NQ Clarifier Residential Air Purifier - HEPA Air Cleaner with Ultraviolet Review

(More customer reviews)I bought my first NQ Clarifier for $699 (free ship) in 2005. It was one of the best purchases I have made as an MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivities) sufferer.
The improvement in air quality is palpable and the machine can clean all the air in a 1500 square foot house twice every hour. This is better than other HEPA air purifiers in this price range. The top-flow design differs from that of most other air purifier brands and it seems to do a much better job at circulating the air and reducing dead spots of unpurified air in a room. The substantial 15 lb of carbon media and powerful fan pulling air through the HEPA filter and carbon media does a good job of totally absorbing all chemical odors and allergens. The purified air finally passes through a germicidal UV filtration system and comes out medical grade pure like what you would find in a hospital clean room.
The indicator lights tell me when I need to clean or replace the pre-filter and/or HEPA filter, and the UV bulbs. It's easy to unscrew and open the filter to change the filters and bulbs, which is good for me.
The roller wheels on this rather boxy machine facilitate moving it from room to room within the house. Even though the machine weighs 50 lbs, I have actually brought it to meeting (meeting rooms) to create a safe room for me there. With all the mouldy off-gassing carpets and office furniture, sometimes this air purifier is the only thing that works.
This machine is noisy, particularly at the highest setting. After a while I got used to the 'white noise' in my bedroom, but it might be too much for some people. (I am a light sleeper).
The service provided by the company is excellent. On three occasions when I called up, I spoke with knowledgeable and friendly staff and was attended to right away. This machine has proven sturdy and reliably built for 24/7 running these 3 years.
I bought my second one in 2007.

Then again instead of buying two smaller units for my small cottage I decided for one larger unit. It's more like a large oscillating fan on medium to high when the air purifier is on it's lowest (quietest) setting. Definitely circulates the air in the room and I have to say I was amazed on how much dust it collected... within a month I cleaned the pre-filter and it needed it. Take into consideration it pushes air from right to left when facing the unit so you can't place it just anywhere in the room.

Bionaire LC0760 HEPA Air Cleaner Review

(More customer reviews)This product is very well constructed. It has two speeds, low and high. The low speed is pretty much quiet enough to sleep with. The Bionaire LC-0760 is a good choice to remove any small particles that are very annoying.
Although I'm not totally knowledgable on air purifiers and the technology behind it (ionization, etc.) but I'm certainly happy with this one. It removed almost all of the dust in the room it was placed. I was sick and tired of having to dust all the furniture in the room so I got an air purifier. After getting one and I dusted for the last time. There are two computers in the room and the computer cases are modded with many fans around the side so I have to watch out for dust more than normal computer users have to as dust damages your expensive hardware. However, with this air purifier, I didn't have to worry about dust getting into my system at all. It's a great investment.

AIR-O-SWISS 2055 Ionizing Air Washer & Humidifier Review

(More customer reviews)Having been directed to an evaporative type humidifier, I became intrigued with the basic design of the Venta and AirOSwiss models. Both use fans to draw air over water, with turning discs passing through the water with tiny grooves and bumps on the discs to vastly increase the surface area over which the water evaporates. No heat to worry about drying out and automatically shutting off, and no bubbling water from a warm mist unit. Also, no droplets of water accumulating on nearby carpet or furniture as you would see with an ultrasonic humidifier. Also, no swampy mold accumulating in the 'swamp style' Honeywell unit that uses a wicking method to draw the water up into a sponge to then be evaporated, leaving a wet sponge to grow all kinds of stuff. The pros and cons are pretty clear:
Pros: No heat to worry about if the unit runs dry- the fan keeps running but so what? It's just a fan; also no to worry about overheating when it runs dry, no ultrasonic misting to leave water droplets on carpet/furniture, easy to clean, no filters to be replaced. No wicking sponge, so the discs are easily removed and cleaned and no 'swamp thing' accumulating in the wet wicking sponge as in other units. Also the water seems to trap small air particles so that there is an actual cleaning function. Air is drawn IN through the TOP of the unit, blows over the plastic turning discs, and comes out the sides.
Cons: Evaporative, which means it cools (fine for the desert country, not so good in winter in the Midwest), no heating, and the fill valve on the water tank is the stupidest location you can imagine, so that at best you can fill it only 3/4 full. Also, it won't shut off when water runs out, so power will be consumed with no humidification happening. See below for the one last 'con' relating to the warranty.
The other con: They SAY on their website they have a 10 year warranty, yet when I got this thing from Bed Bath and Beyond the plastic shaft inside had corroded over time and was crumbling. It was a major effort to get these guys to agree to replace it. It is NOT SAID on their warranty, but apparently the 10 year warranty does not apply to the rotating disc set (surprise!) inside. I told them they had better put that in writing if they don't want to tick off a lot more customers other than me. They eventually replaced it but it took a number of emails and phone calls, so this is not exactly the fastest responding company I've seen. Also note, the 10 year warranty does NOT apply to the water tank and its part . . .that's only 3 months.
For [...] or more, the above limitations cut it to a 3 star, even though it's a reliable humidifier that cranks out the humidity from the unit with no filters and very little maintenance. As a personal aside, I can't stand the reviews which deride humidifiers because their hygrometers show no change. Humidifiers can only be evaluated by how quickly they put water into the air . . . the ultimate humidity change in a space is dependent on the room's air flow, items of absorbency, and atmospheric conditions- none of which are in the control of a humidifier! This item definitely puts out the water into the air.

The warranty is unbeatable. It's super easy to care for. The filter is very accessible. My husband has terrible sinus problems and this machine has been keeping him medication free since we purchased it. You can sign up for an automatic filter replacement program where the new filter is delivered automatically when it's time to change (every six months is recommended in order to maintain the 10 year warranty). It's costly, but worth it compared to the junk that you can buy in an average retail store. You can tell as soon as you open it that it's built to last.

Friedrich Pre-Filter for C-90B Air Purifier Review

(More customer reviews)There are two types of filtering systems; whole house hookups which are installed professionally or self-installed, and individual room units. Consumer Reports says "The most effective type of air cleaner is a professionally installed whole-house system; but it's also expensive and feasible only in houses with forced-air heating or cooling. Simple replacement furnace filters are inexpensive and easy to maintain, but generally better suited to clearing large particles from the air. Room air cleaners are your only option if you don't have a forced-air system."
Of the room units, there are two basic technologies HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air)filters, in which a fan draws air through a paper or fine-mesh filter, and electrostatic precipitators which draw air through an electrical field. Charged particles are then trapped on oppositely charged collector plates.
All precipitators generate small amounts of ozone, which has an odor that may be objectionable. They may also make a crackling sound as they accumulate dirt.
The best precipitators use a fan. I know everybody loves the The Sharper Image and the Hoover one but they have no fan; the Honeywell Environizer has a weak one. The Friedrich C-90 has a fan.
ConsumerReports.org rated this one ten times better over the Sharper Image ones, which are basically over rated and you're paying for the marketing and packaging. The Friedrich C-90 topped all of Consumer Reports tests on filters hands down.
It's not as sleek as the Ionic Breezes, but it gets the job done, and keeps your home as clean as any machine on the market will.

Edenpure signature heater with air purifier Review

(More customer reviews)I live in a rural area and have been eaten alive by the high cost of heating my home with with LP gas. I heard about these heaters and talked to a friend who repairs hvac for his opinion. He said these eden pure heaters are really nice and use approx. $30 a month in electricity to run. I was skeptical until i received my first months elec. bill while using this heater. There was a 400kwh's increase from last decembers bill. at 6.6 cents per kwh, 6.6 cents x 400kwh = $26.40
I usually run this heater for 10-12 hours a day everyday and longer on weekends. The temp outside has been very mild so far this winter. Our average daily temp has been about 30 degrees and when the eden pure runs, my lp gas furnace is quiet and never cycles. This little beauty keeps it very comfortable for us. I would recommend to anybody! just leave your furnace set at your usual temp and then fire this thing up and you'll see true savings. I have a tri-level home and keep this in the bottom den on an inside wall. I opted for the signature model because it has higher wattage and a humidifier. A very nice heater and i'm very pleased with it! Would buy again!!

Neoair PLUS Air Purifier and Air Cleaner Review

(More customer reviews)On the surface, this Neoair Plus has a ok spec. It is $300 for a compact purifier that has a low annual filter replacement cost of ~$60, a low power consumption of 70 Watts, not too noisy at 46 dB, and serving up to 600 square feet with a fan speed of 200 CFM. Now what can be wrong with such a purifier? Well, the problem is that NeoAir Plus is far weaker than it appears. The 200 CFM (cubic feet per minute) fan speed is not very powerful comparing to its competitors. Most purifiers on the market participate in the AHAM (Association Home Appliance Manufacturers) certification to get three CADR values (Clean Air Delivery Rating). There are 3 CADR values for smoke, dust and pollen removal rates. Neoair did not get certified and only reports its fan speed (200 CFM). This is very troubling because a fan speed does not indicate the cleaning power of a purifier. For instance, your typical fan at home has a CFM fan speed, but it has a "ZERO" CADR since it cannot purify air. The CADR of Neoair Plus is probably 200 at its best (where CADR = CFM). Honeywell 50250 has a certified 250 CADR and is sold at $150. 3M Filtrete FAP03-RC has an averaged 290 CADR and is $200. Whirlpool AP450 has an averaged 315 CADR and is $250. All three are cheaper and more powerful than Neoair Plus.
What also concern me is some of the marketing and customer services of this young company. It is rather important to point out that when Neoair claims this unit can serve 600 square feet, the statement is overrated and misleading. The industrial guideline written by the AHAM is to use the smoke CADR and a 5 air change per hour to estimate the usage space. While Honeywell, 3M, and Whirlpool purifiers are more powerful, they are suggested for a smaller usage space of 375, 348, 500 square feet, respectively. This is because these companies follow the standard guideline. (Even through 3M filtrete has a higher pollen and dust CADRs than the Honeywell 50250, 3M has a lower smoke CADR and therefore a lower recommended floor space) Using the standard definition, this Neoair Plus should be used for a 300 sq ft, half of its advertised 600 sq ft. The fact that Neoair did not go to an independent organization to certify their CADR should raise some eyebrows. This misleading 600 sq ft advertising tactic sure seems like a way to prey on average customers. Please understand that, unlike CADR, there is no legal guideline for defining the recommended floor space. Thus, companies can deviate from the standard calculation with no legal consequence. In this case, NeoAir used a 2.5 air change per hour for its calculation -- instead of 5. In addition, this company customer service is somewhat lacking. They do not seem to know their products well when I contact them.
Finally, even if you believe Neoair made a honest mistake, you have to wonder why you want to pay more for a weaker purifier. Let's just take Whirlpool AP450 as a comparison again. Whirlpool AP450 is rated as the number ONE purifier by Consumer Reports. Neoair Plus is $300 and Whirlpool AP450 is $250. Neoair Plus has a cleaning power of 200 CADR at best and Whirlpool has an averaged 315 CADR. Alternatively, you can get two Honeywell 50250 for the same price as Neoair Plus. So, here is another choice: one Neoair for ~200 CADR or two Honeywell for a total 500 CADR. I am simply wondering: Can someone honestly justify a purchase of Neoair Plus in light of all of these superior purifiers on the markets which also happens to have better support?
**For people who are interested here is the math. The recommended floor space is calculated based on a 8 feet ceiling height and a 5 air-change per hour condition. Let's uses Honeywell 50250 as an example. It has a 250 CADR which translates to a 250 cubic feet per minute cleaning speed or 15000 cu ft per hour. Now divides 15000 cu ft per hour by a 8 ft ceiling and by a 5 air change per hour will result a 375 floor space. A shortcut is to simply multiple the CADR value by "1.5". e.g.: 250CADR X 1.5 = 375 sq ft **
