(More customer reviews)My daughter did her science fair project on whether these UV cleaners work or not. After a month of using toothbrushes regularily and keeping some of them just sitting out and putting some of them in this sanitizer, she grew the bacteria off of each toothbrush.
Hate to say it, but bacteria from one of the UV toothbrushes started growing first! Overall, bacteria was on each toothbrush - the UV sanitized ones; the ones sitting in the cup on the bathroom counter; the brand new ones that went straight from the package to the petri dish... all of them.
So, I hate to knock the product here... but we didn't think it made any difference.

Germ Guardian AC5000 UV-C and True HEPA Complete Air Cleansing System Review

When I first turned it on, it had a funny smell that was there whenever the UV-C light was on.
However, I didn't feel a lot of air, so I decided to open the back and make sure I hadn't left any plastic on the filters. The safety switch is triggered by a tiny plastic nub. When I gently removed the back, the plastic nub broke off. I tried to glue it back on, and it broke off again and wedged between the safety switch and the back wall, forcing the safety on.
We ran it last night, and will return it today.
I'm not sure if the funny smell is due to the UV system - we'll see on the next one.
I'll give it one more try.

After a lot of research, I made my purchase and am very satisfied. I can run it all the time, it's completely silent, small, and cleans my 1200 SF apartment. In my older place the Air Oasis seemed to put out a considerable amount more, which I later realized was due to the immense amount of toxins in that #&*$*@$ place! Thanks for a great buy. I have already recommended to others.

(More customer reviews)I have 3 Air Oasis systems in my 3 level home: 3000, 3000 Xtreme and a 5000. The 3000 is on the main level, covers about 700 sq. ft. and runs all the time. The Xtreme is in the basement and runs on a timer for 3 hours at night. It really seems to over-power the 500 square foot area otherwise. I have the 5000 upstairs also on a timer for 4 hours off and on during the day. The 3000 seems about perfect as I have several parrots and the kitchen to deal with. The larger systems will over-power smalle areas and I feel that too much ionization is not good. If the area is rather clean, you can feel a bit light headed with high ionization levels (in my opinion). I have used Air Oasis for over 5 years. The house always smells neutral and fresh. My colds/flu have gone down from 5 times a year to one. I would highly recommend these well-built and attractive systems for controlling the air quality in your home. They are high quality systems and require a new bulb about every 4 years. The 1000 would be a good solution to a large bedroom. I do combine them with the Oreck air filtration systems for complete air management.

(More customer reviews)This UV sanitizer seems like such a great idea - I immediately used it on my remote controls, computer/laptop keyboards & other electronics around the house. I wipe those things off, but hesitate to use a moist spray disinfectant on them. Now maybe we all won't share the cold & flu this winter as in the last few years.
It is a little bulky, that's the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars...still a very good price compared to the one that flips open.
~~~~~Well, it must be working! We have not shared any cold/flu bugs this winter and it is almost spring now.~~~~~

(More customer reviews)I love this device. It is hard to tell if it really works by just looking at it. The proof comes from the smell it gives off when you sanitize your linens. Also, if you have allergies, you just might feel a lot better in the morning after sanitizing your pillow.
I read some other reviews that said the switch came on too easily. Mine isn't like that at all. You have to really slide it to make it come on. The little flash light is a nice bonus. That will come in handy while at hotels.
It is a little cheaply made, thus the 4 stars. For a hand held portable/travel device, this will work great. Some UV-C devices won't let you turn them face up but you can with this one. Those others have a safety feature which will shut off if turned upwards. This one also works continuously until you shut it off.
I purchased this device after getting ill in Mexico. I want to sanitize my room and water on the next trip. I plan on ordering the SteriPEN Classic Handheld Water Purifier next. I am not sure if you can use this device to sterilize orange juice like one review did. The SteriPen says it can only be used on clear water not other beverages. So maybe the same would be true for this device?
Use it for soft and hard surfaces and you'll have peace of mind.

It is extremely effective in purifying the air of dust and odors. It has made a huge difference in my allergies. Looking forward to having one cranking on each floor. The filters are rather expensive, but all HEPAs are.

Germ Guardian GG-1000 UV-C Air Sanitizer Review

(More customer reviews)Ok, I have owned this little guy for a little over a week now and cant comment on its longevity, but... it certainly seems to work well. I am a pack a day smoker and like clockwork I catch any cold my significant other gets within a day or two. She came down with something last week when I bought this plug in unit and she is now finally starting to get over her cold or whatever. I have yet to get sick! I am sure there could be other reasons for this but let me assure you that a robust immune system is not one of them! :)
Some people complain about these units.. saying there is low airflow through them. I'll let you in on a little secret.. it takes some time in contact with light to kill germs in the air. If the air moved too fast the germs would not have enough contact time with the light to die. Put the unit in an area where the air moves around it. Perhaps near a door or in a room with a ceiling fan that normally runs. If you put it in the corner of a room with dead air.. its going to purify the heck out of that corner.. :)
I placed the unit on a kill-a-watt meter tonight and it registered a constant draw of 9 watts. Thats pretty great as far as air purifiers are concerned. I have electronics that draw more than that when they are off. Costco has them 2 for $67 and Lowes has them for $39 ea (then you find one of the MANY coupons for Lowes like $10 off a $25 purchase.. exc).
The technology behind the units is a little questionable and I was not able to find links to the documented evidence of their effectiveness. They claim Harvard did test this product.. hope thats true but I would like to see the source of that claim posted somewhere. UV-C bulbs have been around for a long time, but for some reason they are just now showing up in this kind of a product with no real description as to why that is.
The bulbs only last one year and I cant find replacements locally (yet) so minus one star for that.. otherwise.. good job. Hope its for real.I went back to Lowes today to get another one and they were sold out.
UPDATE: Year and a half later, first bulb replacement (should have been done at the one year mark.. I guess). I took the opportunity to use a duster can and blow out all the dust that had built up in the units over 18 months of continuous use. Wiped down the outsides with Windex. Back in business.
