(More customer reviews)I have owned this filter for almost a year. Even though it SAYS the filters never need replacing, they DO! After use any HEPA filter that cannot be washed will need to be replaced after particulate matter is drawn deeper and deeper into the existing filters, that being said, as a filter I have loved the effectiveness. Now on to customer service.....
Seeing that the filters are now in need of replacing, I searched high and low for a replacement. Finally emailed their customer service on the manufacturer's page. I was informed that even though they sell the purifiers on the open market, the only way to get the replacement filter was thru them. OK doable. The problem is this: The unit needs TWO filters to replace the existing ones, they are not sold in sets of two. Moreover, the shipping costs as much as the filters if not more, they also do not bundle the shipping on the two filters even though the item REQUIRES two filters. After paying 13.00 EACH for shipping of these filters, you would think that shipping time would be reasonable. Be prepared to wait nearly a MONTH or 15 BUSINESS days. GMAB. Regular mail takes no more than three days to arrive ANYWHERE in the continental US. Are these being shipped directly from India? There is no tracking info provided so you wait a month and keep your fingers crossed that your product arrives.
Had I not paid so much for the unit in the first place, it would now be filling my local landfill in exchange for something more consumer friendly. By next year, it may be.
****Update after a month I contacted the company about the mysterious filters only to be told that they were on BACKORDER. Now where is that landfill. Hopefully the Sharp FPP60CX that I ordered will make this purifier obsolete. Too bad.... really good system just really poor customer service.

Blueair Smokestop Filter for 402 Air Purifier Review

(More customer reviews)You're probably completely shocked that this Smokestop Filter costs as much as it does. But trust me, if you have any problems with odors, it's worth EVERY penny.
I normally use the regular Blueair filter for the 402, but I purchased the Smokestop after my neighborhood was flooded with horrible fumes from a nearby methane gas leak. The authorities deemed the gases as harmless, so no evacuations were ordered. However, being very sensitive to fumes of any kind, I became very ill. With no other place to go, I put the Smokestop filter into my 402 and moved the air cleaner into my smallest bedroom, where I camped out for the next couple of days. A trip to any other room of the house left me feeling nauseous, dizzy, with a raging headache and difficulty breathing within minutes (but the fumes were "harmless"!!). The room with the Blueair equipped with the Smokestop filter was absolutely free of odor. It was incredible.
Since not everyone has methane gas leaks permeating their homes (thankfully!), you may never get the chance to test the filter in this way. But it no doubt works wonders with cigarette smoke and other offensive odors that waft into your home.
The filter has 2 "chambers." One filled with activated charcoal, and the other with the familiar Blueair patented white filter. So it doesn't just stop with odors, it still cleans particles from the air with great efficiency, and best of all, Q-U-I-E-T-ly. Just remember to change it after 6 months, even if it means going back to the regular (and cheaper) filter. Happy breathing!
SEPT. 2008 ADDENDUM: I had another fume problem, this time, toxic deck sealant fumes from a home repair seeping into the house. I purchased another Smokestop filter and this time I noticed an odor coming from the filter itself. It's not horrible, but I had become so sensitive to odors after a week of sealant exposure that it made me feel sick. I left the Blueair on high and it has reduced the smell after a few days. To be fair, despite the filter smell, the deck sealant odor was neutralized. And finally, I have a balcony-smoking neighbor, and as soon as secondhand smoke wafts into my bedroom, I turn up the Blueair and the smoke odor is gone in a flash. Just be aware of the initial odor from the filter itself. I'd say I'm dropping my rating to 4 stars, or 3.8 if I could.

I ordered this product from allergybeGone and it arrived promptly, however the packaging was so poor the pre-filter's metal frame was broken in multiple spots. Customer service was very responsive in offering me a refund, I however wanted a filter so I waited for them to restock and reship the filter. They assured me it would be packaged properly. When the filter arrived about 3 weeks later it was packaged in the exact same fashion as the first. While not broken the frame and metal filter have multiple bends and dents. This one will fit in the unit so I'll keep it- but I will not order pre-filters from Allergybegone again.
The filter appears like the original hunter but I can't know for sure.

Austin Air Healthmate Jr Replacement Filter w/ Prefilter - Black Review

(More customer reviews)These filter replacements are very easy to install. You just turn the machine upside-down, unloosen 4 screws and remove the cover. Then pull out the dirty filter and pre-filter and discard in a plastic bag, wipe out the interior with a damp cloth and put in the new filter and pre-filter. It took me about 5 minutes to complete the whole operation. These filters are supposed to last 5 years but I use it in a room that is quite dusty and find that 3 years is about right. It still is cheaper than filters I've used in the past that had to be replaced more often.
I bought the Austin Healthmate Jr. about 5 years ago when I was looking for a HEPA filter and have been happy with it. The three things I like best about it are that you don't have to buy filters very often because you can vacuum the outside of the filter and that it's relatively quiet. The other thing is that it takes air in on all four sides and blows the filtered air out through the top area. It seems to do a good job of filtering the air. It's more energy efficient than air purifiers I've used in the past and it has 3 speeds which is nice.
If you use it in really dusty conditions like mine, you can replace the pre-filter more often than the big filter. I've found this type of material that I could cut to fit at a local hardware store. You get a pre-filter with it. You have to take it apart to replace the pre-filter and filters, but it isn't difficult. You can turn off the machine and vacuum it from the outside and that seems to help the filters last longer. Of course, you'll want to use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter or you defeat the purpose. I replace mine about once a year, but I think the average person could go much longer.
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I don't really have any way of measuring how good of a job it does, only that it seems to do a good job in terms of allergies, odors, etc. There are so many air filters out there and so many claims, that it's hard to sort them out. But if I had to buy a filter for another room, I would probably buy this brand again.

Also be careful of knockoffs. There are some sellers offering non-OEM replacement filters that FIT Hunter, calling them "Hunter replacement filters."

(More customer reviews)I am quite surprised by the fact that I was shipped ONE filter. The item description lead me to believe that this item was in a 3-pack. (Perhaps when it said Item Package Quantity: 3) So after the initial shock of realizing that my $60 went to purchase ONE filter instead of THREE I was quite annoyed.
The only reason I purchased this was because I thought it was a great price, it turns out it absolutely wasn't. Now, aside from that the filter is fine and as described. I chose not to return it because I didn't want to waste the money on shipping, and my old filter was getting quite dirty.
The filter is a hunter brand replacement, not a knock-off brand. (which at this point I would've preferred actually at the $60 price)
If you are reading this and do not see the "Item Package Quantity: 3" on the page and are wondering what in the world I am talking about then just know that the item description was probably fixed.
First time I have been burned by Amazon... Buyer Beware!
