These pads really help remove the mineral by absorbing particulates before they stick to the hot surface in the humidifier. Without the pads, we would have to clean the humidifier much more often and it would be more difficult.

(More customer reviews)I have had this unit for several years. It has outlasted all "Sears" brands and models.
Secrets to making it work: I use the 1041 wicks. Every two weeks or so, I take it into the bathroom, pull out the wick and using a hand held shower, spray off the wick thoroughly. This helps lower the mineral build-up and the wick lasts longer. Also I change wicks about every two months. So I need about three for the heating season.
Yes the electronic "humidistat" doesn't work. Simple, I set the unit to a higher humidity than what is displayed. When I want to run it, I turn the unit on. When I want it off, I turn it off. And I use a separate humidity gauge. This one works wonderfully:

As for noise, I only run it on the 2, 3 or 4 level. Yes, you can crank it up, but just like any fan, the more you crank it the louder it gets... and I can hear the TV just fine even when this is running...
It's much easier to carry a bucket of water to this unit to fill it up than clumsy bottles to drag out and carry elsewhere.
GREAT humidifier and I've had this one for several years and if I need another one, I'll hope to get another one of these.
Here's another hint. Don't mount it on the wheels that come with and then put the entire unit on a towel or carpeting scrap. Also helps if you spill a bit of water when filling.
Do NOT forget the bacteriastat either, but be careful when using this additive, as always. And yes, it is normal for the wick itself to be about half dry (at the top) and half wet (at the bottom). The entire wick does NOT need to be saturated soaking wet for this to work as the "well" of water is only the few inches at the bottom...

William Ultrasonic Humidifier in Black Review

(More customer reviews)I recently moved to Aurora, Colorado (just outside Denver) and at 5,400 feet the humidity is extremely low. I noticed my skin began to itch, which it had not done before. My doctor advised moisturizing creams, which helped a bit, and an air humidifier. After a lot of investigating I narrowed my search to the Air-O-Swiss and the Williams. In fact, both units seemed remarkably similar with both using a "patented" ionic silver cube and a filter cartridge which seem visually identical. Both units provide warm and cool mist. Possibly the technology is licensed from Air-O-Swiss? The deciding factors for me were:
(a) the Air-O-Swiss listed a capacity of 650 sq. ft. and the Stadler 1,000 sq. ft. I have a very small house - 850 sq. ft. - which effectively makes the Stadler a whole house humidifier for me.
b) almost every review of the Air-O-Swiss commented on the inaccuracy of it's humidity meter and the only review I could find of the Stadler said it's meter was accurate.
THE GOOD: Assembly is a snap. The meter is close to accurate. The water tank is extremely easy to remove and fill. It is dark plastic, but the water level can be seen quite clearly. The tank capacity is sufficient for 9 hours of continual use. The machine is so silent that I have to listen closely at night to hear anything at all. Just a soft "ssshhh." The Control Panel is easy to see and use with many options and has a light to indicate no-water.
My skin itching stopped.
THE NOT SO GOOD: It is expensive and every source I could find had the same price. The filter cartridge needs to be replaced three or four times a year, depending on the hardness of your water, or when white dust accumulates on the unit or on a small mirror held to the fog. The ionic cube must also be replaced once a year. A testing strip is included and if your water has a hardness greater than 21 degrees dH, an ionic humidifier is not recommended. They suggest then using an impeller humidifier. The Desired Humidity cannot be set lower than 40%, but I found that setting it at 60% results in an actual humidity level of about 37% which is what I want anyway.
THE BAD: I couldn't find any.
SOME NOTES ON OPERATION: The instructions say not to place the Stadler Williams directly on the floor or next to heating. I went to Ace Hardware and found a small, plastic step stool for $12 that is 5" high. This keeps the unit off the rug and makes it easier to access when changing settings. If you have an chest of drawers in the room with space on top it should work equally well. A review of the Swiss-O-Air reported good results from soaking the ionic cube in water for 24 hours before initial use to increase effectiveness. I don't know if this is beneficial, but I did it and had no bad result.
I set my unit to Auto/Sleep
IMPORTANT: Several reviews of the Air-O-Swiss said that they used de-ionized water. The Stadler unit specifically recommends against this. It is designed to use with untreated water or with a drinking water filter system such as Brita. Using any additives are specifically warned against.

Crane Licensed Filter Cartridge Review

(More customer reviews)We have the "Hello Kitty" humidifier and I bought this filter in the hopes of reducing the white dust from the humidifier, but all that ended up happening was that the water in the humidifier turned a dingy yellow-brown color and my daughter's room FILLED with white dust. We had to open the windows and turn on the attic fan just to clear it all out. I'm not sure why this happened. I followed the directions on the box (although it's 100% fool proof, all you have to do is place the filter in the base of the unit). We're actually better off without a filter and I'll be returning this for a refund.

-The machine is very quiet. It gurgles from time to time but is hardly noticeable.
-No filters are needed, thereby saving money and reducing the chance for mold to grow.
-LED nightlight is neither dull or too bright. The change is crisp and ambient without being abrasive.
-The ability to run the humidifier independent of the LED lights.
-After running for 2 days straight there is still absolutely NO dampness on or around the machine from the mist.
-Cool mist makes it safe for children. There is no possibility of being burned.
-Cool mist is also beneficial in the hot weather since it lowers the surrounding temperature.
-The size of it is compact and fits almost anywhere without looking unattractive.
-Top swivels 360 degrees. You don't have to change the position of the machine to change mist direction.
-Able to clearly see the water line.
Cons:
-The necessity of purchasing distilled water. When used with tap water a white "dust" accumulates on the surrounding surface. Gallon jugs of water are under a dollar, but it adds up.
-The tank and base do not lock together, however there are two blue dots that must match up on the outside for it to run. This is fine if you don't plan on having to move it around, but without a locking mechanism they come apart with little effort and enable spilling if not held upright and together. I mention this since kids will naturally want to touch and explore the machine. The water in the tank can not come out without the plunger being pushed down or the cap being off but there is a pool in the bottom half of the machine that can spill.
Overall this is a great product. I'm so glad I don't have to deal with filters or leaking tanks any more.

The water lasts several days when on the middle setting, there is no filter, it is easy to clean, and it is silent. I bought this with just one review. I was cautious but the review was glowing, and I have used it for 3 months and love it. You do have to use this on the counter instead of the floor because there is not a high speed fan that will push the air up. You can adjust the beak to any direction and direct the air flow. The reservoir is a little hard to fill but just take off the beak and it will balance in the tub.

(More customer reviews)We've been very happy with this humidifier. The cool mist is very fine, so it feels more "misty" and less "damp" or "rainy" than some other humidifiers we've tried. The controls over how much or little mist it produces are effective, and it's very quiet. Although this product is a little more expensive than some other types of humidifiers, it's worth it. I know several people whose babies have been burned by warm mist humdifiers, and they also tend to breed bacteria, neither of which is a concern with this product. Also although we originally bought a cheaper humidifier, it turned out not to be as inexpensive as we first thought because we kept having to replace the wick and it quickly broke. This humidifier doesn't have "hidden costs" and is sturdy and well made.
Also if you take off the lid and watch what it does to produce the mist, it's really cool (not a reason to buy the product in itself, but interesting ....)

(More customer reviews)I purchased this for my baby's room and because winters are extremely dry in Colorado. It is a lot bigger than I thought - that's not a bad thing. It is extremely easy to use... just fill up and push the on button. The instructions are very simple. One thing I like about it is that it is ultrasonic (it uses a metal diaphragm vibrating at an ultrasonic frequency to create water droplets. It is not loud, and also produces a cool fog.). No extensive cleaning needed, no adding bleach to the water, etc. It does the job great. There is one little thing that bothers me... the on light is green (it turns red if it runs out of water) and it is very bright at night. I like my room to be dark and this tiny light really lights up a room. I did cover it up with some electrical tape and now it doesn't bother me. Other than the light (which was an easy fix), I love this humidifier.

1. Easy to clean: This humidifier has several components (filter, water reservoir, vapor tube, tray) They are all easy to clean. Other humidifiers I researched looked just as straightforward to clean. However, I wanted to avoid using evaporative humidifiers since I was concerned about pet hair finding its way to the vent assembly. This humidifier seems ideal for a pet owning household

Since November I had really noticed how much drier it is in Illinois, especially at night with the heat on full blast. We purchased this humidifier and have been running it for about a week. It has been awesome. If you can deal with having to refill every night before bed, then you'll enjoy this piece of electronics. All dryness that I had to deal with at night before we got this is gone. It's pretty sweet. A night light that changes from green to blue is nice and relaxing. Not overwhelming unless you are a pitch black sleeper. It offers a bunch of settings, has an ionizer and allows you to adjust the humidity. I researched this pretty hard and it seemed like this would be the best bang for the buck and so far it is. For 43 bucks and free shipping you can't beat it. I'll do a follow-up in a few months, but so far so good. It's got my blessing.

(More customer reviews)After reading several reviews of humidifiers that all gave mixed opinions I ignored all of them and picked up this humidifier at a local drug store for $32. This humidifier is small, approximately 11"Wx6"Dx13"H, making it suitable to put on the floor or on a counter. It consists of two main parts, a white plastic base and a clear blue plastic container. The base has two sliding switches. One turns the unit on/off and the other adjusts the amount of water vapor being released in to the air. The blue container sits on top of the base and has a handle on top and a round screw-on part on the bottom to fill the container. It also comes with a filter that goes in the base. There is a round piece on top of the container that turns to adjust and direct the stream of water vapor. Pros: 1. In my opinion it is quiet, much quieter than the Bemis wicking humidifier I previously had. The sound level is comparable to a table top fan. It does make water noises though which I find soothing but could be an annoyance. 2. It runs for a long time without refilling. On the lowest setting 1 container full of water will last a couple days of continous run time. On the highest setting, it needs to be refilled once a day. 3. It has no wick, which would start to smell in the old humidifier I had. 4. No chemicals need to be added to keep scum from growing in it. 5. You can see the water vapor being released in to the air (so you know its working). 6. See through container. You don't have to open anything to see how much water is left. 7. Container fits in kitchen sink to be refilled. 8. Relatively easy to clean. Cons: 1. It has no automatic shut off when the water runs out or when the air has reached the desired humidity. 2. When the container is picked up to be refilled it drips so you need a towel with you. When the unit is running, the water empties out of the container into the base where it is turned into water vapor. So when you remove the container the base is still full of water. 3. It needs to be cleaned regularly, once a week at least unless you don't mind the scum that grows on it. The base has corners that you need a Q-tip to clean. It is recommended that it be cleaned with a damp cloth and a bleach and water solution and then rinsed well. We have extremely soft water so I don't know how long the filter that comes with the humidifier will last or how well it works in places with hard water. I would recommend this humidifier.

(More customer reviews)I've had this humidifier for 3 years and it has been a great machine!! I use it every night, mostly in the fall and winter months, without fail. It is quiet and small enough to place on a night stand by my bed. I use purified water and I don't have any problems with white dust or water spots. I would recommend 2 of these for larger bedrooms or living areas. Very easy to use and keep clean.

(More customer reviews)I was very disappointed with this product. Initially, it appeared to be exactly what I was looking for. A small, attractive, filterless humidifier for a baby nursery that had natural antimicrobial properties.
Prior to purchasing, I read a number of online reviews. Like most products, there were mixed results, but overall the impressions seemed positive. I had read a review by Paul here who claimed that the product didn't work. I assumed his review was hyperbole. Turns out Paul was right. It just plain doesn't work.
We ran this humidifier in our baby's nursery for 16 hours straight (refilling so the tank was never empty). In 16 hours, the humidity went from 33% to 34% !?!? It just plain doesn't work.
Now, I should also state some obvious stuff. We used the product in what should have been an appropriate environment. The room is very small 9'x9' and the door was closed to eliminate loss of humidity. Also, my experience can not be explained away as a single faulty unit. I had ordered two (another for the master bedroom), so we retested with a second model with identical results. Both produced a visible mist immediately above the unit, so they were 'working'.
This product has great features in theory. I was excited by the nano silver technology which in theory should make for a clean and low maintenance experience.
I returned this product and purchased a well known brand. While it didn't have all the flashy features of this Germ Guardian, it just plain works. I installed it 10 minutes ago and the room humidity has climbed more than 5%.
Bottom line. This product doesn't work. If you plan to purchase it despite these warnings, make sure you keep your receipt for the return.

They're pretty good humidifier. One gallon tank will last you a bit more than 8 hours run time at low setting. Set it on high and you're down to 6 hours max. No Fan, super quiet operation. Will keep an your room at 85% humidity or above creating mildew and fog your window glass.
Place it under/above or closer to your heater vent or source of wind so the steam will be evenly distribute to the whole room. Otherwise, you'll start seeing mildew dropping from your ceiling even at low setting.
Cleaning is fairly easy. I highly recomended using only filtered water, use tap water and you'll find an excessive chlorine build up around the boiler after a few usage. It will be almost impossible to scrape the chlorine off.
